At this time the majority of the issues appear to be with LAFN DSL users. I believe that the provider has all of their DNS servers upgraded now with the new addresses. There is a new issue in that the provider apparently has recently blocked access to port 25. Unfortunately this was done because of the rampant abuse of that port to spam users. If you are not able to send mail and your mail program is reporting it can't get to the server and lists its IP address as 75... (not 206...) then this is the issue. You will need to change the port number for outgoing mail from 25 to 587 or 26. Port 587 is the IETF approved port for submitting mail. Port 25 generally worked before, but it was not intended for that and that is now being enforced. Port 26 is an alternate port that can be used when there are SSL issues with port 587.

Comments:
Okay, so that's the end of my use of Outlook and Outlook Express for LAFN email, since neither will handle this "standard" port assignment.

Thanks for the info.

Are you sure about that? I have had both of the work fine. Some versions I had to use port 26. Some will handle 587. There are too many versions to keep track. Try both. One or both should work.

Unfortunately, I'm sure. Neither Outlook 2000 nor OE6 will utilize Ports 26 or 587.

Besides my own testing, both Wisc.edu and Hawaii.edu say 587 won't work and to try 465. Any chance of activating 465 for us?

I'll send you details on my testing and on these Websites to your email from my Gmail account.

I'm posting here (probably for the last time) for the sake of other members.

Thank you Doug! We're on DSL and it seems to be working now since we can send ad receive mail. :D

I had little trouble getting Apple Mail configured, but the Windoze 7 netbook was another story. For my wife's Acer, I set up a Gmail account and she now uses gmail smtp for outgoing mail.

as of 9/9/10 this morning my mail server keeps timing out and I cannot send mail.

I am currently having trouble getting to current users on the home page. Nothing on the blog yet.

It's 4pm Thursday 9/9/10. When I left for work this am I couldn't get lafn or my mail, and from here right now I can't get lafn. Was thinking there would be a mention of it here on the blog, but now I'm wondering if somehow it's not affecting everybody.

After a week of frustration with the lack of Port 25 and Outlook 2000, I accidentally discovered the solution:

In the Tools>Services>Internet E-mail-[service]>Properties window, Advanced tab, UNcheck the box under Outgoing mail (SMTP) for This server requires a secure connection (SSL).

This works for Outlook 2000 and Outlook Express 6.

(In Thunderbird v2, in setting up the SMTP server, you need to select TLS (if available); here also, SSL will not work.)
